International Oracle Users Group Live! 2005

May 1-5 at Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel, Orlando, Fla.
Don't miss the International Oracle Users Group's premier educational event created for Oracle users by Oracle users.

This educational symposium features a collaborative learning environment where database administrators, developers, technical managers and other Oracle users convene to share inside industry knowledge and gain tips and techniques to make their Oracle products, applications and implementations more effective.

By networking with peers and meeting with industry partners and third-party solution providers, you'll learn how to get the most out of your existing products and find out ways to add to your existing environment. With more than 200 sessions covering seven focus areas, IOUG Live! delivers all the education you need to maximize your Oracle Database and Applications.

TUSC once again will have a large presence throughout the week, delivering an assortment of expert presentations and greeting attendees in the exhibition hall. "The Oracle Experts," in fact, have nine different talks scheduled during the week.

TUSC PRESENTATIONS
SUNDAY, MAY 1
Title: "Java-based Oracle Development" (8-hour University Seminar)
Presenter: Christopher Ostrowski, technical management consultant
Track: Application Server & Web Services
Expertise: All
Time: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Room: Dolphin Room 2
This presentation covers a number of topics, including components you should "study" to round out your development knowledge. JDeveloper 10g (and the Oracle Application Developer Framework) is an amazing development environment. Each new version gets closer to rivaling Oracle Forms. Now with ADF, which includes TopLink and Struts, you can quickly and easily develop a GUI/HTML-based Web application using this point-and-click, drag-and-drop development tool. After JDeveloper's ADF is covered, Chris will talk about Java Server Pages, Java Stored Procedures and Java database connectivity. The discussion also will cover a number of tools you might want to consider for your development efforts.

MONDAY, MAY 2
Title: "Flashback Everything -- Implementation and Management"
Presenter: Kevin Loney, senior technical management consultant
Track: Database Administration
Expertise: Intermediate
Time: 10 a.m.-noon
Room: Dolphin Asia 5
As of Oracle Database 10g, you can use flashback database commands, flashback table commands and flashback version queries to quickly revert objects back to prior states. In this session, you'll see how to implement these features, along with details on their performance and management implications.

Title: "Expand to the PL/SQL Grid: New Oracle 10g & 9i Release 2 PL/SQL Features"
Presenter: Joseph C. Trezzo, president and chief operating officer
Track: Application Server & Web Services
Expertise: Intermediate
Time: 1-2 p.m.
Room: Dolphin Asia 1
This presentation covers the new PL/SQL-related features specific to Oracle Database 10g and Oracle9i Release 2. Features covered include new PL/SQL commands, new Oracle supplied packages (DBMS_WARNING, DBMS_STATS, DBMS_METADATA), new functions, new SQL commands (regular expressions, flashback tables), etc. Each will include example code to enforce their capabilities and usefulness.

Title: "Deploying Applications to Oracle Application Server 10g"
Presenter: Christopher Ostrowski, technical management consultant
Track: Application Server & Web Services
Expertise: Intermediate
Time: 2:15-3:15 p.m.
Room: Dolphin Southern Hemisphere 2
This presentation discusses the basics of deploying applications to Oracle Application Server 10g's OC4J containers. The three basic methods (via the command line, EM Web site and JDeveloper 10g), along with the pros and cons of each method, are discussed. Other topics covered include security and monitoring.

Title: "Oracle Internals at the Block Level: Beginners, Go Away!"
Presenter: Richard J. Niemiec, chief executive officer
Track: Database Administration
Expertise: Advanced
Time: 4:45-5:45 p.m.
Room: Dolphin Southern Hemisphere 2
This is a look at Oracle moving at the block level. You'll see how blocks move from disk to memory, how they become current blocks, how they become consistent read (CR) versions and other interesting tidbits of information that only keep you from achieving the business goals of the company. OK, it's because you want to know why. You'll also look at some of the cool x$ tables out there that you should stay away from, including many that begin with x$ksm (like x$ksmsp -- kernal storage memory SGA heap), as well as why the move toward 64-bit technology, memory-resident databases and RAC/grid makes this even more important to understand.

TUESDAY, MAY 3
Title: "How to Use the Regular Expression Functions in Oracle Database 10g"
Presenter: Kevin Loney, senior technical management consultant
Track: Architecture & Infrastructure
Expertise: Intermediate
Time: 11:15-11:45 a.m.
Room: Dolphin Asia 1
This presentation discusses the syntax and usage for the regular expression functions introduced in Oracle Database 10g. Examples will be provided showing the use of REGEXP_LIKE, REGEXP_SUBSTR, REGEXP_INSTR and REGEXP_REPLACE.

Title: "New 10g and 9i Features for Developers"
Presenter: Anthony Catalano, vice president -- operations
Track: eBusiness & Application Development
Expertise: All
Time: 4:45-5:45 p.m.
Room: Dolphin Southern Hemisphere 1
As new database versions roll out, so do some exciting new features. This presentation discusses the new Oracle Database 10g, Oracle9i and Oracle8i features that enhance the developer's ability to create mission-critical Web-based applications. The new features demonstrated add reliability, stability, speed and flexibility to any application. Just a few of the topics covered include: case expression and case statement, native compilation of PL/SQL code, autonomous transactions, native dynamic SQL, bulk binds with collections, merge statement and new datatypes. Participants gain an understanding of the features, learn when to use them and see the design considerations associated with each.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 4
Title: "Tuning Using Statspack"
Presenter: Richard J. Niemiec, chief executive officer
Track: Database Administration
Expertise: Intermediate
Time: 10 a.m.-noon
Room: Dolphin Southern Hemisphere 1
What is a quick way to monitor, find and solve performance problems? Statspack. It's a quick way to solve many of the performance issues that plague your system. This presentation shows how to use Statspack to evaluate and fix issues related to the top five wait events, load profile, instance efficiency ratios, wait events and wait histograms, latch waits, top SQL, instance activity and file I/O issues. See how to quickly solve performance issues without doing a system evaluation that is more costly than the system itself.
